I have always been interested in community journalism. I like shedding light on community events that are happening and what the members of that community think about it. As a Canadian – Sri Lankan, I am interested in both Canadian and Sri Lankan news stories. My cultural background often informs my reporting, and I like visiting South Asian communities to find stories, including the issues that affect them. Before being a journalist, I was an English language, literature and history teacher. I use my education to inspire my article writing.
Working as a teacher, I encountered lots of international students who like me, came to Canada to improve their futures. I felt myself relating to their experience and listening to their concerns in class. I was surprised by how little had changed since I came to Canada many years ago and the current time. I often went beyond my lessons to give them advice on how they can not only survive in Canada but also make a life here like I did. Their stories inspired me to find similar experiences and report on them.
Being part of Humber’s journalism program gave me the knowledge and experience I needed to realize my journalistic potential. I hope to use this impetus as I go forward on my journalism
